As a legislator I fought to eliminate ballot harvesting, increase transparency, and combat voter fraud. While the Secretary of State has a number of responsibilities, ensuring we have open, fair, and accurate elections is its primary role. Like so many I was shocked by the record long lines during our Presidential Primary, frustrated with the inability of our current Secretary of State’s inability to produce timely results, and upset with the multiple errors made by this office that have cost the taxpayers millions of dollars in failed software, wasteful reprints, and more. The fact is that while there are many moving parts to ensuring we have well-run elections and timely and accurate election results, none of this work is actually complicated, so there is no good excuse for failing the voters of Arizona. I’ll ensure that we work with our county election officials to provide Arizona voters with the best possible product. I’ll work to protect the integrity of our elections by fighting voter fraud. And I’ll fix the messes made by our current Secretary of State so that voters can finally have access to campaign finance data in an easy to use format.
Having been a teacher and a youth pastor, I’ve seen the difference involved parents can make, which is one reason I believe parents know best and should have the freedom to decide what kind of education they want for their children. I’m proud that Arizona is a national leader in school choice and that we have so many of the nation’s top performing schools. I also recognize that many of our districts are still suffering and are often failing our children. That’s why I continue to fight the politicians and their bureaucratic allies who put unions and administrators ahead of students. I’m pleased we were able to add hundreds of millions of dollars in new education dollars, but we still need to better support our teachers, reward good teachers with merit bonuses, and create alternate pathways to get highly educated professionals into the classroom, particularly in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Our schools and school system are getting better. We need to finish the job.
As a freshman legislator I voted for SB1070 and other efforts to stop illegal immigration and protect Arizonans from the myriad costs of it. As a result I was attacked publicly and privately because extremists on the left believed that my Latino heritage should have obligated me to support illegal immigration. Where they are wrong is that I take my oath of office seriously, I believe in the rule of law, and I will always have the backs of hard-working, tax-paying Arizonans who are citizens or who are here legally. 95 million Americans are out of the workforce, yet open-border advocates continue to block real border security, hurting our economy, our workers, and leaving us vulnerable to terrorist attacks. I will continue to fight to protect Arizona taxpayers from the negative effects illegal immigration has on our health care, education, and criminal justice systems, and I will continue to oppose amnesty in any form.
Arizona is now a national leader in job creation, in where to start a new business, and in where businesses are relocating to. Why? Because we have been serious about balancing our budget and getting our house in order. Because we have gone after burdensome regulations that kill jobs. Because we offer companies a stable economic environment that is pro-growth. All of this is very attractive to companies that are trying to escape high-tax, high-regulation states like California. Add to all of this our climate and our people, and you have a recipe for success. I’m proud to have played a part in this success by helping lead efforts to balance the budget, pay off our state debts early, get rid of wasteful regulations, and more. Arizona is open for business, and that means more jobs and better jobs for our citizens.
I fought to defend traditional marriage, I wrote the nation’s first ban on abortion for the purpose of race and sex selection, and I have a 100% pro-family voting record. Our values and our culture are under attack all across this country and it is up to all of us to speak loudly and clearly in defense of both, or we will lose them. The media will bully and intimidate in an effort to silence us, but we must speak up regardless. Please support those who fight to protect the family and the family values that make America great!
